So with the advent of this news, Cleveland Guardians, my Grandfather becomes “The Last Man” to ever pitch a world series winning game for the Cleveland Indians. In some respects I have great pride in the fact that his place in baseball and the “Tribe’s” history is forever cemented. In other respects I wish they didn’t feel the need to change and buckle under that social pressure. I also wonder if the fans had any say?
Today I took my son and drove back to Helena Arkansas so he could see where his Great Grandpa and Grandma Bearden lived. We visited the old house, the ball field and the graveside. We stopped at Sonic to have a burger and shake like I used to do with my Grandma. Things haven’t changed much between Memphis and Helena. Lots of cotton fields, Tunica, closed casinos, MS/Ark bridge and the great Mississippi river. Grandma and Grandpa lived in Helena proper and not West Helena. Sad to say Helena proper has seen better days. Pleasantly enough the last place they lived still appeared to have someone living there and the property was well taken care of. We made our way to the ball field and it was also a pleasant surprise that it was in pretty nice condition. The sign could use a coat of paint but all in all my son had a bit of fun there. Then we stopped by the graveside and took pictures while there. It was a fine day and I’m glad I had the chance to get my son there.
